Leading edge slats and slots

Sep 04, 2014 · The first aircraft fitted with controllable slots was the Handley Page H.P.20. Licensing the design became one of Handley Page's major sources of income in the 1920s. Similar, but retractable, leading edge devices are called slats. When the slat opens, it creates a slot between the slat and the remainder of the wing; retracted, the drag is reduced.

Leading-edge slats's wiki: Slats are aerodynamic surfaces on the leading edge of the wings of fixed-wing aircraft which, when deployed, allow the wing to operate at a higher angle of attack. A higher coefficient of lift is produced as a result of angle of attack and speed, so by deploying slats an aircraft can fly at slower speeds, or take off and land in shorter distances. Leading-edge slats - IPFS is the Distributed Web Slats are aerodynamic surfaces on the leading edge of the wings of fixed-wing aircraft which, when deployed, allow the wing to operate at a higher angle of attack.A higher coefficient of lift is produced as a result of angle of attack and speed, so by deploying slats an aircraft can fly at slower speeds, or take off and land in shorter distances. Leading edge flaps/slats - PPRuNe Forums Leading Edge Slats have no effect upon lift, in fact, at low angles of attack may reduce lift. Their effect is to delay separation of the airflow at higher angles of attack, thus stall speed is reduced, allowing for reduced Takeoff and Landing speeds, exactly as for Leading Edge Flaps. What is the difference between flaps and slats? $\begingroup$ Just wanting to point that flaps can be located both at front and back of the wing (trailing-edge or leading-edge flaps), while slats only exists at the front. Main difference between slats/flaps is not location ,but (as you pointed out) functionality $\endgroup$ – Radu094 Jul 28 '15 at 13:57

Leading-edge slot - Howling Pixel Leading-edge slot. A leading-edge slot is a fixed aerodynamic feature of the wing of some aircraft to reduce the stall speed and promote good low-speed handling qualities. A leading-edge slot is a spanwise gap in each wing, allowing air to flow from below the wing to its upper surface.
